VALUE SHORTLIST · COMPARISON 03

Three espresso machines that make sense for the money

The strongest value depends on the work you want the machine to do: heat quickly, texture milk for you, or support a hands-on 58 mm workflow.

Breville Bambino: put more of the budget into the grinder

Breville lists the Bambino at $299.95 with a 54 mm portafilter, single-wall and dual-wall baskets, milk jug, tamper, cleaning tool, and descaling powder. It uses low-pressure pre-infusion followed by 9 bar extraction and a manual steam wand. At 6.25 inches wide, it also has the smallest listed width in this comparison.

The machine does not automate milk texture. That is either a useful skill-building feature or extra work, depending on the buyer. The meaningful value argument is budget allocation: pairing it with a $199.95 Encore ESP costs $499.90 before a scale, the same general price region as a Bambino Plus without a grinder.

Breville Bambino Plus: pay for lower-friction milk drinks

The Plus costs $200 more than the base Bambino at the checked list prices. Its defining addition is the automatic steam wand with three milk-temperature choices and three texture levels, while manual texturing remains available. Breville also lists a 54 mm stainless steel portafilter, 18 gram dose design, 9 bar extraction, and three-second ThermoJet start.

The premium is easiest to justify in a household making several lattes or cappuccinos where repeatable, hands-free milk reduces daily effort. It is harder to justify for espresso and Americanos, where the automatic milk system contributes little to the main drink.

Gaggia Classic Pro E24: conventional hardware, manual routine

Gaggia lists the E24 at $549 with a lead-free brass boiler, brass group head, 58 mm stainless steel portafilter, 9 bar OPV calibration, 72 ounce water reservoir, mechanical rocker switches, and a commercial-style two-hole steam wand. Its boiler is documented as single-boiler and dual-use, so brewing and steaming are separate modes.

The E24's case is not faster automation. It is a conventional layout with mechanical controls and a standard-size portafilter. The included accessory list shows a plastic tamper, so a buyer may want to budget for a correctly sized tamper. CremaGuide has not verified long-term serviceability or modification paths and does not use either as a ranking claim.

What the extra money actually buys

MoveAdditional list pricePrimary gain
Bambino to Bambino Plus+$200.00Automatic milk texture and temperature, while retaining manual mode
Bambino Plus to Gaggia E24+$49.0558 mm portafilter, brass single boiler and group, mechanical controls
Bambino to Gaggia E24+$249.05Traditional single-boiler workflow and 58 mm format, not greater automation

Quality-price decision tree

  1. Mostly espresso or Americanos?Start with the Bambino and direct the savings to the grinder.
  2. Mostly milk drinks with low effort? The Bambino Plus premium directly addresses that workflow.
  3. Want to learn a traditional manual routine?Consider the Gaggia E24, including warm-up, mode switching, and a better tamper in the budget.
  4. No espresso-capable grinder yet?Choose the complete system first. A machine-only comparison is incomplete.

Before ordering

Confirm voltage, current availability, returns, warranty, and support in your country. The US De'Longhi Dedica Maestro Plus was also researched at $499.95, but the official page showed it out of stock on the review date, so it was not placed in the primary shortlist. It remains a relevant alternative when available because it combines a compact 8.15 inch width with automatic milk texturing and three infusion temperatures.

Compare complete setups with grinders and scales.
