Baratza Encore ESP: simple settings you can write down

The Encore ESP separates its 40 positions into a higher-resolution espresso range from 1 to 20 and a coarser range from 21 to 40. Baratza includes a dosing cup sized for 54 mm portafilters with a 58 mm adapter. The upper M2 conical burr uses a quick-release design for cleaning, and the maker sells the ESP ring burr and holder as a replacement part.

Its stepped system is easy to communicate and repeat. The compromise is built into every stepped grinder: the desired flow can land between positions. Dose or yield can sometimes bridge a small gap, but those are additional variables.

Fellow Opus 2: compact stepless versatility

Fellow lists the Opus 2 with 48 mm conical burrs, a stepless side dial, integrated ionizer, tool-free burr access, automatic stop, and two magnetic catch cups. The espresso cup supports 54 and 58 mm portafilters. Its 10.5 inch listed height is the lowest of the three.

The stepless dial gives continuous control for espresso. Moving frequently between espresso and coarse brew settings may require more careful note-taking than a clicked scale. Fellow states approximately nine seconds for an espresso dose, but CremaGuide has not measured speed or retention.

MiiCoffee DF54: flat burrs and single dosing

MiiCoffee lists the current DF54 as version 1.5 with 54 mm stainless-steel flat burrs, stepless adjustment, an ionizer, bellows, 58 mm dosing cup, aluminum body, and a 150 watt motor. The seller claims less than 0.1 gram retention and notes changes to the chute and declumper across earlier versions.

The product page is unusually explicit about version changes, which is useful but also means reviews of older units may not describe the current configuration. The dosing cup is 58 mm; users with smaller portafilters will use the included adapter or transfer method. Warranty is listed as one year with MiiCoffee.

What does the extra $29.05 buy?

The DF54's premium over the other two is small relative to total setup cost. It buys a different architecture, not a verified universal improvement in the cup. Flat burrs, bellows, and a metal body may suit a specific workflow. They do not establish that every coffee or user will prefer the result.

Questions that decide the purchase

  1. Will beans stay in the grinder?Choose a hopper workflow. If every dose is weighed separately, prioritize low retention and easy transfer.
  2. Will you switch brew methods?Recorded steps simplify returning to settings; a stepless dial offers finer movement but needs careful marks.
  3. What portafilter size do you own?Check the included cup, adapter, and portafilter clearance.
  4. Who handles support?Read warranty, returns, replacement parts, and shipping terms before comparing only burr diameter.
